System Requirements:
Playstation 2, 8-Mb memory card, Duel Shock
I Recommend:
ugh? Playstation 3! Doh!

The world's most underrated and overhated N64 game has made its jump to the Playstation 2. You play the persona of Jean-Luc, a experienced member of the team called STAT. Their mission is to recover a secret satellite base from a group of Sancovasian terrorists named the Crying Lions.

Although KOEI have beefed up the character models and some of the graphics from the original game, and pumped up the graphics in high resolution, the game still suffers from consoleportitosises. The wall and ground textures are very grainy compared to other PS2 games and lack in detail.

The game focuses more on tactical battles than on strait on action. The game is similar to Metal Gear Solid or Syphon filter but with more complex controls. You can not move when you pull out your gun to shoot. So standing out in the middle of a open feeld will most likely get you killed. Instead you must hide your back against a wall and take pop shots around the corners or hide under the safety of crates, and then target your enemies when you get a open shot. It can get frustrating at times because of the awkward control schemes and quirky camera that never faces the right direction in a fire fight, the camera is your real enemy and it kills you many times. Once you do master the controls and tame the camera, the game is quite addictive for around the first ten levels. Then you discover that you are doing the same actions over and over again. Hide behind the wall, shoot, duck under the crate, shoot, blast the yellow box that controls the laser beams, shoot, and on and on. Winback can get redundant but at leasted the game has a interesting but unoriginal story with some very corny voice acting.

Duck run and cover boy!

I guess Koei was too cheap to hire some real talent for the voices so the North American division called best friends and relatives and asked them if they would be the voices of Winback. Why do console game companies always skimper on one of the most important aspect of gaming... voice acting. The music on the other hand is very subtile and fits the game perfectly. The music even changes the mood depending on how much health you have left. It ain't Beethoven but at lease it fits.

Winback also include so cool deathmatch modes that you and your friends can frag to. There's traditional deathmatch modes and plenty of cube modes, like shoot the cube, collect all the cubes before the other player does, ect. There's a cooperative bot mode, and other fun stuff. Although Winback is a different type of deathmatch. Alot of fun to have here once you and your friends master the controls.

Winback is a fun yet frustrating stealth game, and should hold over any stealth gamer until Metal Gear Solid 2 arrives.

Good Press

+ Loads of fun

+ Thirty Levels of action

+ Nice Graphics and music

Bad Press

-Repetitive

-Bad voice acting

-Frustrating camera and controls

Total 7.2 out of 10

Although Winback's gameplay never reaches that of metal Gear Solid or Syphon Filter, it still has it moments. Too bad the controls are impudent and the levels repetitive.
