In Earthbound,
you play the role of Ness, a young boy bound by fate to save
the future from the evil Giagas. If it couldn't get any worse,
Ness' rival Pokey is causing trouble around Eagleland, and
Mr. Belch is stinking up the air with fumes and zombies. What's
a boy to do? Kick some arse, thats what! This is another series
by nintendo that is underrated and underplayed. Yes the graphics
are simple and the story is childish. But deep down it is
a hard-core RPG with more sophistication than most RPGs out
today.
The Game play has
some unique features compared to other RPGs, you can see your
enemies on the map, giving you the option to avoid them if
you want to. The battle system is similar to the dragon warrior
series, in battles you don't see your party on screen but
you do see the enemies on the screen in a unaimated state.
You get most of action with the text. While this might sound
boring, it is spiced up by some of the best animated backgrounds
I've ever seen in a game, you feel like you stuck in a lava
lamp with enemies inside of it. Battles can range form hard
to easy, depending how well equipped and what level you are,
You can tell when your ready for tougher enemies because you
will automatically beat weaker ones without going into the
battle screen.
The enemies you
fight are hilarious, from new age retro hippies to Starman
Jrs', you can't help but laugh! You don't "kill"
your enemies, you make them "tame". What the heck
does that mean? I guess bashing any new age retro hippie with
a bat would not only make him "tame" but would make
him "uncontious". You can't have a 12 year old boy
killing things, ya hear?!
The game is filled
with interesting quirks, like using a ATM to receive money.
Ness' dad and mom must be on crack because, no parent would
give a kid a ATM card and $100 + dollars for every monster
ness' makes tame. Oh well. It is meant to be hilarious.
The music is filled
with humor and emotion, all in all well done! But the best
part is the translation, It rocks! Nintendo has done a excellent
job a localizing the game for the American public!
